Buffer tanks are installed primarily to prevent excessive cycling of the vacuum pumps by providing a “reserve” of vacuum. Usually, they are selected based on the previous acceptable performance with the size of the pump selected. This is a good method to ensure the vacuum pump will function properly.
To optimize its presence, we usually design it adequately to allow the production to ride-through a cycle of surge demand too.
Common International Code that covers the fabrication of such buffer tank is ASME Section VIII; Division 1 after the appropriate equivalent mechanical strength required is established.
